General information

Putting a henhouse with his own hands

Chickens, as well as other poultry, should be provided with regular walking. Why is this so important? During the walk, they are not only happy about the sun, but are also searching for various insects.

They can also get various seeds in the ground. Walking in no case can not be neglected, if only because fresh and green food have a beneficial effect on the health of chickens.

The best place for walking is considered a small meadow, on which grows juicy grass. Or a garden. If you prefer to grow chickens "on the floor", then it is necessary to equip a paddock near the house. It is also called a solarium. The solarium must be fenced. How to fulfill this and other conditions, we will now tell.

Design requirements

Self-made corral:

  1. Most often, tanning beds are fenced on the south side using a chain-link mesh.
  2. It should be quite high. For layers - 2 meters or even higher. For broilers - not less than 1.8 meters. It is better to exceed these figures than to downgrade. So there will be less risk that the bird will simply fly away.
  3. In the pen you need to place a comfortable feeder. If possible, in addition to feed, add small gravel there. Next you need to add mash or feed, or something else than feed the poultry in the area.
  4. It is important to carefully monitor the condition of the feed, because in the open air it deteriorates quickly.
  5. Its size depends on the number of chickens in your compound, and, of course, on your abilities.

But this, for example, is not scientifically proven, you can find this fact not worth attention. But it has been proven by science that it is 6 times more than the content in eggs of such a course is 6 times more carotenoids than in the eggs of those chickens for whom walking is not available.

Types of walking

Chickens contraindicated draft and strong wind. Therefore, you need to place the room on the leeward side. Deaf walls of the house will protect chickens from this problem. It is desirable that bushes or a spreading tree should be planted near the hen house. Plants will provide additional protection.

We turn finally to the types of walking. When is it better to build a closed range walking range? When the site is not far from the forest, or not fenced. Ideally, a closed range is done on the same platform as the poultry house. He has, of course, a roof and walls of fine mesh.

This type of walking has advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, birds in such walking are not afraid of predators. They can not be afraid, for example, rats and weasels. But on the other hand, they will not be able to peck on fresh grass here.

If possible, outdoor walking should be provided.. He, too, needs to be fenced off with a net, make a full or open canopy. Better if you protect the birds from the scorching sun. You can do this with the help of the roof or small shrubs. Or - and that, and another. So that the birds can choose.

  • if you do not live in the southern part of the country, you will definitely need glass wool in order to insulate the hen house,
  • bricks
  • optional: chipboard for ceiling and wall cladding,
  • sawdust to equip litter,
  • slate to put on the roof,
  • boards, their number depends on your layout,
  • screws,
  • polyurethane foam
  • nails.

How to build a good chicken coop: step by step instructions

Firstly, you need to decide on the number of birds and the type of chicken coop, it will be summer or winter.

If you have decided on these issues, you can proceed to the construction of the paddock.

  1. Determine the area on which the foundation will be poured and the supports installed.
  2. Then it will be the turn to pour in an ordinary strip foundation, to reinforce it with the unnecessary metal that you have in the country.
  3. Wait for the foundation to dry out and insist on it.
  4. The construction of the paddock is simple, similar to a shed or a garage, at this step you need to lay a brick, the height of the structure is at least 2 meters, the size depends entirely on the number of birds. to be kept in the pen.
  5. When several rows of bricks are completed, the solution should be infused. You can even postpone the work the next day.
  6. When the walls are ready you need to prepare the foundation for the roof.
  7. After the manipulations that precede this, you need to cover the roof with slate, everything else is standard for buildings of this type.
  8. At the end, it is necessary to install windows and doors in the places you have chosen in advance.
  9. Then you need a complete sealing of the premises with foam.
  10. Wait for the foam to dry, cut off the excess, then putty all irregularities.

How to make a summer aviary?

What are the differences of summer aviary for chickens? It also consists of a chicken coop (where birds spend the night), nests where eggs will be carried. the sticks on which the chickens like to sit, in some cases - there are nests in the second tier, in order to pick up the eggs, you need to equip the stairs.

In order not to open the door every time, you need to equip the grill. Walls can be made of mesh.

How long will the construction take?

Very fast - it only takes a couple of days. The technology of building a chicken coop has been described above. We can only say that the construction of a "house" for chickens with a range of walking is a fairly quick and simple task.
Sex, by the way, is very desirable in the hen house.
The following reasons:

  1. No predator can undermine and attack.
  2. So the birds will be warmer. In the summer there are also cold nights. The walls must be upholstered trim board.

Below you can see a photo of a summer aviary for walking birds.

Care of the room

  • The food should be abundant, but the hens are unpretentious birds. They will fit and food waste.
  • Lighting should last almost all day. 16-17 hours a day can not turn off the light in laying hens.
  • Comfortable temperature for layers - 25 degrees. Drafts are not allowed.
  • Chickens love to swim in the sand or ashes. Therefore, it is better to have a box with ashes in the hen house or on the walk.
  • For the nests, the chickens need to pour some hay in the corner, and they will do the rest. Some chickens are more comfortable to carry in boxes.
  • These birds love to perch. It is better to equip it at a height of 1 meter, the diameter of the perch should be about 5 cm.
  • Room cleaning should be everyday. To do this, you need to shake up the litter every day, clean it from litter, every day you should clean the litter boards.

Care for free-range chickens is not an easy task, but if you understand all the rules and particulars - it's not so difficult.

  1. The food should be abundant, but the hens are unpretentious birds. They will fit and food waste.
  2. Lighting should last almost all day. 16-17 hours a day can not turn off the light in laying hens.
  3. Comfortable temperature for layers - 25 degrees. Drafts are not allowed.
  4. Chickens love to swim in the sand or ashes. Therefore, it is better to have a box with ashes in the hen house or on the walk.
  5. For the nests, the chickens need to pour some hay in the corner, and they will do the rest. Some chickens are more comfortable to carry in boxes.
  6. These birds love to perch. It is better to equip it at a height of 1 meter, the diameter of the perch should be about 5 cm.
  7. Room cleaning should be everyday. To do this, you need to shake up the litter every day, clean it from litter, every day you should clean the litter boards. Global cleaning, whitewashing house should be once or twice a year.

There are several options to build a portable walking range. More often it is used in the rearing season. Young chickens cannot be immediately planted with adults, they must first be raised first, otherwise there is a risk that they will be taken by old birds.

Walking for chickens collected from wooden bars, then covered with plastic mesh on all sides. Metal frame is not recommended because of its large weight. Such a pen is moved around the plot as the grass is eaten under it. If the nights are warm, then you can leave the chickens inside at night. But previously it is covered from above with a waterproof, wind-proof material from rain and wind.

The size of the structure must be such that it is easy for one person or two people to move it.

IMPORTANT: In such enclosures, laying hens hold up to a month - one and a half, broilers 2-3 weeks.

Construction of large enclosures with their own hands

A simple construction option that is suitable for large areas is made from a chain-link mesh.

For the construction of an enclosure for chickens do it yourself:

  • Grid,
  • Strong steel pipes with a diameter from 5 to 10 cm,
  • Wire for bundles,
  • Bulgarian,
  • Concrete,
  • Auxiliary tools.

The construction of the simplest attached stationary paddock is carried out in several stages:

  1. Markup. First, determine the corner racks of the future aviary. If its width coincides with the width of the chicken coop, then from the wall at the edges measure the length of the paddock.
  2. “Door search”. A common mistake by novice builders is forgetfulness. Many poultry farmers already in the last stages of the construction of the paddock recall that they did not put the door, that is, it is impossible to get inside. In order to prevent such an oversight, the place of entry is determined immediately, and the subsequent installation of the supports is carried out taking into account corrections on the doorway.
  3. Marking for support columns. Over time, the netting chain stretches a little and sags. Without supports, such deformation will lead to serious damage to the barriers. Supporting poles set every 1.5-2 meters.
  4. Work with the drill. The supports should be flat in the ground. To do this, the drill on the markup from Stage 3 make indentations up to 0.5 meters. It is important to take into account the peculiarity of the soil. If the soil is loose, then the diameter of each pit should be about 35 cm, and in solid ground there should be an opening, the diameter of which is slightly wider than that of the pipe.
  5. Installation racks. During the cutting of pipes to the height of the aviary add depth to which the pole will be buried. That is, in the construction of boundaries with a height of 1.5 m will need two-meter support. They are inserted into prepared pits, powdered with gravel, sand, leveled by level. Then pour concrete, adjusting the results. In this position, the racks remain for 2-4 days until the solution is completely dry.
  6. Preparation of the basis for the grid. The rabbit is attached to the pillars with the help of special hooks that are pre-welded. Three mounts are enough - above the soil at a height of 10 cm, not reaching the end of the rack 10 cm, as well as in the middle. In order not to spoil the walls of the chicken coop, they are nailed a board on which hooks are attached.
  7. Rabbit tension. The mesh is fixed on the basis with the help of knitting wire or nails, stretch around the perimeter of the pen. Its lower edge should be 15–20 cm longer than required so that it can be covered with earth. So the chickens will not be able to make a dig and get out of the aviary.
  8. At the last stage, the gate is installed on the hinges, a bolt or lock is mounted.

The mobile aviary has its advantages and disadvantages. Volumetric walking for chickens is difficult to move, so mobile pens make small, and they are suitable either for chickens, or for small numbers of chickens. But this solution allows the birds to provide fresh grass in the summer season, as it can be moved if necessary.

To create a mobile structure you will need:

  • Dry boards 3 by 10 cm,
  • Osp,
  • Wooden bars 2 to 4 cm
  • Grid with galvanized.

The simplest option is to make the structure in the form of a triangular roof, gradually assembling the sidewalls, the frame and installing the struts:

  1. Making walls. For one sidewall, you will need three boards of 2.5 m each, which will form the length of the enclosure, and 3 short ones up to 1.7 m, which set the height. Long boards are laid on short ones, creating the shape of a regular rectangle. The structure is strengthened, tightened with galvanized mesh. The second wall is collected similarly. To simplify further work, you can immediately make cuts on short boards - in the upper part at an angle of 60 degrees, and in the lower part - 30 degrees.
  2. The formation of the frame. The upper parts of both walls are joined and fastened with screws, and the lower ones are set with transverse strips for reinforcement from the outside. Basting transverse strips do not rigid, so that it can be calibrated using spacers.
  3. The spacers are set at the level of the middle transverse strips every 30 cm. For a normal connection, the ends are cut in 30 degrees. Fasten the boards with screws. When all struts are installed, the lower transverse planks are rigidly reinforced.
  4. Covering the PCB is needed for chickens in order to hide from the heat or rain. They upholster the upper part of the frame in whole or in part. It depends on the desire of the poultry farmer.
  5. From above, the entire structure is reinforced with additional lining of transverse wooden planks.

Arched pen

The arch enclosures are separate enclosed areas that are not attached to the chicken coop. Their advantage is that the area of walking is fenced on all sides and chickens will not be able to escape or fly away. From the side it may seem that to build such a structure is very difficult. But with a few livestock poultry in the farm use a little trick.

The arched corral has the shape of a standard greenhouse covered with a rabbit net. For its construction take a ready strong frame of the greenhouse and collect the open-air cage.

Here you do not have to think through such subtleties as supporting bases, the presence of the entrance door. The developers have done everything themselves and offer a nearly turnkey solution. It will only be necessary to cover such a skeleton with a mesh, securing it with bundle wire.

It is very important to comply with the requirements of the pen. Otherwise, the chickens may be too crowded or spacious.

The area of walking on one head makes 3 square meters. Smaller space is quickly trampled to bare ground and no grass will grow there. A fresh juicy greens need a chicken for full development.

Important! If there is no possibility to allocate a large area for walking, you will have to mow and give weed daily in summer. And in the winter to treat hay, use premixes.

  1. Aviary for chickens easier to build a chain-link with a metal posts from the grid. Chicken can fly high.
  2. The height of the fence must be at least 2 meters. With a smaller height of the net, and the standard chain-link is 1.5 meters wide, the corral is covered with a canopy. He will also allow livestock to walk in rainy weather.
  3. At any place around the perimeter you must make a wicket so that a person can freely enter the territory of a walking area. In the summer, grain food and water are placed there, and the bird only comes to the coop to sleep and carry eggs.

Attention! Do not place a pen for chickens and adult chickens in the valley. Continuous flooding during rains, dirt, dampness will lead to diseases.

Chickens are cleaned, washed in the ground. So they are saved from parasites. It is recommended to provide an opportunity for "bathing" the bird. If natural conditions do not allow, then you need to bring some sand into the aviary and equip the "bathroom".

Features of the pen

For your chickens to fly well, you need to create ideal conditions for them. Before the process of building a chicken coop you need to take care of additional lighting, as well as heating. If it is not possible to carry out heating, then at least you need to make a good warming. Your reliable and warm chicken coop is a pledge of healthy birds, and an increase in the number of eggs.

When designing it is important not to forget about the ventilation of the structure, therefore there should be window vents. The lack of shutters can lead to the fact that animals will be hot, and this will affect productivity. In addition to the chicken coop itself, it is necessary to build a walking distance, that is, a fence with a net. This structure will be an aviary for birds and protection from rodents or predators that can attack chickens.

Build yourself

Directly the hen house itself needs to be built away from the living quarters, because the chickens leave litter, and this is an unpleasant smell, so the farther the better. Also, an old unused barn is perfect as a new chicken coop. If you do not have a barn, then the structure must be built from scratch with your own hands, and the most important thing to begin with is to determine the dimensions. They depend on the number of chickens. According to reviews of poultry farmers, for 20 chickens, for example, a chicken coop of 15 square meters is needed, and an aviary not less than 3x3 meters. If the area allows, it is better to make a paddock more.

Tools and materials

The main thing in building a chicken coop is to properly draw a sketch for yourself, and decide what type of structure will be built. This will help you save and not spend extra money. In our variant, there will be a standard insulated coop.

For this we need:

  • Building tools,
  • glass wool for insulation,
  • brick,
  • Chipboard for the ceiling, or wall cladding at will,
  • sawdust for bedding in the chicken coop,
  • roof slate,
  • forest, the amount depends on your layout,
  • nails
  • polyurethane foam
  • screws.

Step-by-step instruction

Our construction first of all begins with filling the foundation, and leveling the floor for the future chicken coop. The foundation depends on what type of chicken coop will be, either summer or winter.

If you have decided on the size and placement of future walking, you can proceed to construction, according to the instructions with your own hands:

  4. The design is quite simple, similar to the barn or garage. We start to put a brick, the height should be 2 meters; then we choose the dimensions ourselves.
  5. When you have built several rows of bricks, stop the work and let the solution stand, then continue the next day.
  6. When the walls are already built, it is necessary to make the foundation for the roof.
  7. We take the slats, put them on top, beat the chipboard, then we cover all this with glass wool.
  8. Then, cover with slate. Everything is very simple and standard for any building of this type.
  9. Upon completion, you need to install windows and doors, in the places you have previously chosen.
  10. And at the end of construction you need to make a complete and effective sealing, this will help us mounting foam.
  11. Wait until the foam dries, cut off the extra pieces, then putty all irregularities.

What should be walking?

Before building an aviary with our own hands, we need to determine its size. According to experienced poultry farmers, one square meter should be supplied per hen. It is better not to save on the size of walking, this may further lead to the fact that the birds will be uncomfortable and cramped and this will affect egg productivity.

Next to the aviary should not grow a lot of grass. It closes the sunlight, thanks to which the birds warm up and get the vitamin D they need. It is desirable that weed grows in the middle of the pen. If not, then you can plant it. It is recommended to attach an open-air cage to the chicken coop so that the chickens can graze during the day and go to warm at night.

Why do I need to walk?

Breeding chickens is popular in agriculture. Birds give eggs and meat, the sale of which brings a good, stable profit to the breeder. However, without a chicken coop and walking for birds, farmers will not be able to control the movement of their numerous farmstead.

In addition to the main feed, birds peck grass with pleasure and dig up seeds from the ground. Therefore, enclosed space is feathered.

To minimize costs, the pen hens can be built with his own hands. The process will take a lot of time, but the result will meet the expectations.

Most often walking, for walking chickens, fenced with a metal grid. Its height is at least two meters. Otherwise, the birds will fly over the obstacle. The place reserved for the aviary can be sown with grass.

Cooking material

First you need to make a project room. This will help calculate the required amount of material for the house.

In the construction market, about ten meters of a chain-link iron mesh with a mesh size of about a square centimeter should be purchased. You will also need wooden blocks from which you can make the walls and floor of the chicken coop. Their number depends on the desired length and width of the room.

In addition to the materials for the construction of the house, additional tools will be useful. Need nails, saw, ax, iron mesh for fencing. With all the necessary materials and tools, you can build a wonderful walking for chickens.

How to make a portable pen?

If there are few layers in the yard, they can be placed in a portable pen. This design can be moved to places with fresh grass. Most often the corral is used in the summer and for rearing. However, a smaller enclosure is made for chickens than for adults.

To make a portable aviary, it is not necessary to prepare the foundation. It is enough to assemble the frame and fit it with metal mesh. The ceiling of the structure will be slate, plywood or polycarbonate. Before construction, you can find and study the video with step-by-step instructions.

So, a portable pen is assembled from scrap materials. As a rule, for its construction used wooden slats or plastic pipes, and metal mesh. The construction of the paddock begins with the connection of the wooden boards between them. The result is a rectangle, exactly the same design will be needed to fix the walls of the paddock.

In the corners of the figure, as well as along the perimeter of the structure, rails of the same length are vertically attached. It is determined by the farmer depending on the desired height of the building. A second rectangle is attached to these wooden segments. The frame for portable walking is ready. Now you need to obtyanut design mesh.

For the convenience of transferring the enclosure, the mid-lengths of the rectangles are connected by a transverse rail parallel to the other two sides. In addition, this rail will serve as a support for the roof of the paddock.

Such a building can be used by breeders as a summer aviary. It is only necessary to provide such a house with feeders and drinkers so that the birds continue to receive the main feed.

The so-called summer version of the pen will cost the farmer several times cheaper than building a stationary 24-hour walking for layers.

Varieties of pens for chickens

A standard pen is a plot that is fenced around the perimeter with a grid, metal grill or planks. As a rule, it is located near the chicken coop so that the bird can go out of the shed directly to fresh air, and in the fencing itself they make a door or wicket for the owners. The area of the pen can be only a couple of squares, and maybe quite spacious - it all depends on the availability of space on a country site. There are many options for such pens, but they are all divided into two types - mobile and stationary.

Travel pens

Small mobile corral

Mobile pens are used in the warm season, allowing the birds to be grazed on fresh grass. They are compact, lightweight, covered with a net or canopy from above, so that the chickens do not fly over low walls. There are portable structures equipped with protruding handles on the sides, and there are more convenient ones - on wheels. Such pens can be easily moved along an even stretch by the efforts of one person, unlike portable ones, which need to be raised together.

For chickens, portable pens are made in the form of large cages, and the chicks are there only in the daytime. All that such constructions are equipped with is a drinking bowl, a feeding trough and some canopy from the sun and rain. Adult chickens daily distill from the chicken coop to the pen and back too problematic, so they are there constantly. For this reason, a mini henhouse with a roost and a nest for layers is additionally equipped in the pen. To save valuable space, the chicken house is often installed on high supports, which means it occupies the upper part of the pen and does not interfere with the walking of the birds.

Summer hen corral

The shape of the structure most often meets rectangular, triangular and arched corrals. As construction materials for the framework, wooden bars, boards, steel pipes, fittings are used. Lightweight mini pens are made from PVC pipes. Tight frame most often with a metal mesh - welded or a rabbit, but some use a polymer mesh with small cells. Cloth nets are not recommended, as the birds stick their heads into the holes and get tangled. Protection from rain, wind and sunlight is provided with polycarbonate, slate, corrugated flooring and other similar materials from which you can build a shed.

Small chicken enclosure

Preparation for construction

The construction of the pen does not require special knowledge or much experience, so anyone who knows how to use a building tool can cope with this task without outside help. To make the pen reliable and convenient, it is necessary to correctly calculate the dimensions, choose a place, carefully choose materials for construction.

But first you need to decide on the type of pen. If the number of chickens does not exceed 15-20 heads, and there are free plots on the estate for grazing, the best solution would be a mobile pen with a summer chicken coop. It takes a little space, moves around the area easily, the bird always has fresh grass. In addition, it is a great way to get rid of weeds - for a few days the chickens will peck out every last blade of grass.

Mobile chicken coop on wheels

If there is no opportunity for grazing or the livestock is too large, you need a stationary paddock. In this case, you should choose the right place, prepare it to create the most comfortable conditions for the bird.

Small chicken coop with a paddock

Council It is advisable to start building the pens before the chicks grow up and move out of the box to the barn. This will allow you to calmly, without haste, find a place, determine the dimensions and the drawing, and carefully prepare the materials.

Selection of materials and calculation of the area

When choosing a material you need to consider the type of construction. For portable and mobile pens, lighter materials must be chosen to facilitate the movement of the product to a new location. Best of all for the construction of the frame fit wooden bars section of 50x50 mm. There are options for PVC pipes: the structure is light and strong enough, although it costs a little more than wood.

Coop and grid coop

The frame of the stationary pen should be as strong and durable as possible, therefore, preference should be given to metal pipes, and steel corners should be used as jumpers. The timber is also suitable, but it must be pre-treated with protective impregnation from rotting, otherwise it will be necessary to change the stand after several seasons.

As for the grid, here the optimal choice is considered to be a fine galvanized mesh, chain-link or welded. You should not take a cheap grid (without a protective coating), since it will not last for a long time. After the first rain, rust will appear on it, and in 2-3 seasons it can be thrown away.

Galvanized fine mesh

A good option is a polymer mesh, but only on the condition that there are no rats or martens that easily gnaw through plastic in the area.

The choice of the cell size depends on the age of the bird: a chain-link with a 50x50 mm cell is quite suitable for adult chickens, and 20x20 mm for chickens. If it is a welded mesh, then the optimal cell size will be 25x50 mm and 25x25 mm.

The area is calculated taking into account the number of poultry population. The larger the territory of the pen, the better, since in the cramped hens often fall ill, rush worse and fight among themselves. On average, one chicken requires 1 m2, therefore, the pen for 10 chickens should not be less than 10 m2. The shape of the enclosed area can be any, depending on the availability of free space.

The shape of the pen depends on the availability of free space on the site.

In order to correctly calculate the size and quantity of materials, it is necessary to draw a drawing or select an already finished one. There are lots of options with detailed parameters, so choosing the most suitable is not difficult. When self-drafting on the drawing indicate the location of the main racks and lintels, the width of the canopy, the parameters of the house for chickens. If it is a stationary pen, pre-measure the area to avoid errors in the calculations.

Choosing a place

For stationary corral location is of particular importance. Walking should be dry, closed on the north side, located as far as possible from the roadway. In principle, if the place under the chicken coop is chosen correctly, then the conditions for the paddock are also suitable. The fence is installed on the southern side of the hen house, while the wall of the shed at the same time serves as the wall of the pen. If there is very little free space in front of the shed, you can protect the territory around the perimeter of the building or on the side, the main thing is to arrange a direct exit for the bird from the hen house to the pen. In this case, the north side of the fence should be solid, for example, slate or sheeting.

If both the chicken house and the pens are planned to be built at the same time, the hinged option is perfect for saving space, that is, building a chicken coop on high pillars-supports. With such an arrangement, the space under the coop is also used for walking and there is no need to build a separate shed from rain and sun. Such buildings are quite common in small cottages, where every centimeter of area is counted.

Coop on stilts

Chicken coop on stilts with their own hands

The selected area needs to be prepared: remove large stones, debris, make sure that there is no broken glass in the soil. Along the perimeter of the future fencing, the grass should be removed and a layer of sod should be removed to a depth of 10-15 cm. If deep grooves are present, they should be covered with fine gravel and earth to prevent the formation of puddles during rain. After that, you can proceed directly to the construction.

Stationary open netting railing

This is one of the easiest options, not requiring much time and effort. For the construction will need:

  • galvanized mesh in rolls,
  • steel pipes with a diameter of 50-100 mm,
  • knitting wire
  • Bulgarian,
  • pliers,
  • roulette,
  • hammer,
  • building level,
  • hand drill,
  • concrete solution.

Step 1. Mark the location of the corner posts of the pen. To do this, from one corner of the coop measure the width of the pen, then repeat the same thing on the other side. The distance from both marks to the wall should be the same.

Step 2. It is determined from which side the wicket should be located, and mark the width of the opening along the marking line. On average, the width of the gate varies from 80 to 100 cm, depending on the complexion of the owners of the site.

Step 3. Between the corner posts make marks with a pitch of 1.5-2 m under the intermediate posts, without which the grid will sag.

Installation scheme of the fence from the chain-link mesh (tension method)

Step 4. Using a hand drill, they make a pit marking 40-50 cm deep and with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the pipe. If the soil is too soft and loose, the diameter should be increased to 30-40 cm.

Step 5. The pipes are cut to the desired length (to the height of the fence you need to add the depth to which the racks will be driven into the ground) and lowered into the pits. They pour fine gravel and sand, level the pillars vertically and height, fill the pits with concrete. Once again check the level of the location of the pipes, if necessary, correct, leave in such a position for 3 days, so that the solution is properly seized.

Step 6. From the outer side, metal hooks are welded onto the pipes: the lower one is 15 cm higher from the ground level, the upper one is 10-15 lower than the top of the pipe and one is in the middle.

Step 7. A wooden bar of 50x50 mm is nailed to the wall of the shed, where the grid will be attached, or a metal corner with drilled holes for the wire is screwed with screws.

How to install a fence from a chain-link

Step 8. The edge of the grid is fixed on the shed with nails or knitting wire, then stretched between the posts, hooking the hooks. All posts must be inside the perimeter, not outside.

The grid of different rolls is connected to each other using a wire that extends from the edge of the grid. You can also use knitting wire. It now remains only to make and install the gate. The simplest gate is a rectangular frame made of a shaped tube with a mesh welded from above. Instead of pipes, it is possible to assemble a frame of bars, reinforcing the corners with metal plates. Next, set the loop and hang the gate in its place.

On soft, flowing soil, it is recommended to dig the lower edge of the net by 15-20 cm around the perimeter, since chickens like to rake the ground and may accidentally crawl out of the pen. If the area is rocky, there is no need to dig in the net, it is enough that it touches the ground surface. When fixing the mesh with knitting wire, make sure that its sharp ends do not stick out inside the fence - birds can catch and hurt them.

Stationary pen with canopy

For the construction of such a pen will need:

  • profile pipes with a section of 20x40 mm, 40x40 mm and 60x60 mm,
  • polycarbonate sheets,
  • chain-link or welded,
  • drill,
  • Bulgarian,
  • welding machine,
  • nuts and bolts
  • level and roulette,
  • knitting wire.

Step 1. Perform a layout for bearing racks. The first row of racks should be located at a distance of 40-50 cm from the wall, the second row - on the width of the pen. The pitch between the posts in a row is 2-2.5 meters.

In the racks pre-drilled holes for fixing

Step 2. By marking digging holes 100 cm deep and 30-40 cm in diameter.

Drilling holes under the posts

Step 3. Pipes of larger cross section are cut by grinder to the required length. Racks located near the wall should rise about one and a half meters above the eaves of the roof, the second row of supports should be made lower by 50 cm in order to create a slope for the flow of water.

Step 4. The first pipe is lowered into the pit, the vertical is leveled, covered with rubble and concreted. All other pipes are installed in the same way, controlling the height and verticality. Until the concrete is well grasped, the work will have to be suspended for 3 days.

Step 5. For greater stability of the frame to the wall of the barn on both sides screw the profile 20x40 mm. The length of the profile should correspond to the height of the wall, and it should be located in the same plane with the extreme posts.

Strapping for structural stability

Step 6. Make a canopy. On the upper edge of the uprights, the upper strapping belt is welded from a 40x40 mm profile pipe. Between racks, at a distance of 20 cm from the upper belt, the lower one is welded using a 40x20 mm pipe. Between the belts, braces of braces are made from pipe sections 40x20 mm, fixing them at an angle of 45 degrees.

Support for a canopy

Step 7. On the resulting farm canopy attach rafters from the boards.

At first it is advisable to try the boards on the frame, perform an exact fit to avoid distortions, and then remove and process them with a protective compound. They can be fixed only after complete drying.

Step 8. On top of the rafters they fill the crate of boards with a section of 25x100 mm, with a step of 35-40 cm, after which the polycarbonate is laid and fixed with thermal washers.

Step 9. Now you need to make a harness from the profile of a smaller section. The profile is cut to size, try on to the supports from the outside, mark the place of fixation. Next, mark the holes for the bolts in the uprights and crossmembers. The bottom piping should be located at a level of 5-10 cm from the ground, the top one - at a height of 1.5-1.7 m. When mounting the crossbars, leave an opening for the gate.

Roof installed lighting

Step 10. If part of the pen is planned to be taken for walking of chickens, in that place around the perimeter they make a fence from a fine-meshed mesh up to 40 cm high. The mesh is pulled from the outside and tied with wire or plastic clips.

Step 11. Tensioning the chain-netting on the frame and fixing it with knitting wire. If you wish, you can weld hooks on poles and hang a net on them.

Fencing two types of nets

Step 12. The hinges are welded to the canopy rack, then the wicket is applied and the attachment points are marked. Screwing the upper part of the loop, the gate is hung in its place. To the other stand at the opening is welded the valve, on which the gate will close.

Size calculation

The size of the pen for birds depends on the number of birds. The lack of space can lead to a crush during feeding, and can cause stress, which will reduce the productive abilities of chickens.

When calculating dimensions, consider the following:

  • for each adult should be 1-2 square meters. area: for example, 10 chickens optimal area for walking will be 14 square meters. m - these are the dimensions that are relevant for laying hens, since they are active on the walk,
  • for chickens of meat breeds that are sedentary, you can take a smaller area for walking: for example, 4 square meters will be enough for growing broilers. m 6-8 individuals.

Construction of a portable pen with their own hands

The portable structure is constructed from lighter materials so that it is convenient for a person to rearrange it along the section. Such pens are good for growing young cattle and chickens of meat breeds that are perfectly gaining weight in a couple of months in a warm period.

Construction of a stationary covered pen

A stationary pen is made covered if the breed of chickens can fly over the fence, or with the possible access of small carnivores or birds. Let's take as a basis a pen of 2x7 m and a height of 2 m, which adjoins one two-meter end to the wall of the chicken coop.

We make the design yourself

So, we decided on the location of walking for chickens. When you know the exact dimensions, you need to choose the right amount of wooden beams, which will serve as our frame. We will also need a pre-measured amount of the chain-link mesh, this is the most versatile material for fencing. Now proceed to the construction of walking with their own hands.

Comments and reviews

I remember my father and I tried to make the same chicken coop at my dacha. Of course I had to tinker a little, but the result paid off. If you count all the costs and time, then it is much more profitable than hiring people. We already have it for the second year and at least that, the chickens are happy and the omelet is excellent in the morning.
