How to sow carrots, so as not to thin out

The most unpleasant thing in growing carrots is thinning. The seeds of this culture are so small that it is almost impossible to sow them evenly, so it comes up: now empty, now thick. We offer you two methods, tested by generations of summer residents, which will allow you to sow carrots so that you do not have to thin out them later.

The first method is based on the cold resistance of carrots - as is well known, this culture can be sown even before winter. So, as soon as the snow begins to melt in your garden, make a hole in the glade (one spade deep on a spade) and put a bag of carrot seeds pre-wetted with water. Put earth on top, then more snow. Tag this place so as not to lose. After 10-13 days, the seeds should turn, remove them, mix with sand and scatter on the prepared bed. The sand must be dry. With this method, seedlings will appear in a few days, which is especially valuable - usually carrot seeds “sit” in the ground for a long time.

The second method may seem complicated, but, in any case, interesting. It is proposed to make a paste from flour and water with complex fertilizers dissolved in it. When the paste cools, carrot seeds are poured into it and stirred well. Seeds should be evenly distributed in the paste. Pour this carrot-paste cocktail into a bicycle plastic bottle with a “drinker” stopper or into a bottle of sauce and squeeze it into prepared and moistened grooves on the bed. Seeds should not go to bed densely and evenly.

The main problems with planting carrots

To get ready carrots, you have to work well, because there are different features of its cultivation. It is the thinning of carrots - it is an unpleasant problem that caused many gardeners to spend a lot of time on the seedlings, carefully thinning them. The fact is that carrot seeds are very small and this greatly complicates the uniform sowing. If you do not calculate and throw too many seeds into the groove, you will soon have to thin them out, and if you throw a little, they may not climb at all, or very rarely.

But if there is a problem, then there must be a solution. Gardeners have developed several methods for sowing carrots, so that they do not thin out.

Ways of planting carrots without thinning

Before you start planting seeds, you need to determine the place where the bed will be. The best option is to choose a place where weeds barely grow. Weed grass will rise earlier than the planted seeds and will not allow them to climb well. It is not necessary to plant the seeds in heavy ground, because the carrots will be shallow and curved. It is also necessary to pay attention to the level of soil moisture - in an extremely humid environment, the carrot will begin to rot, and due to the lack of moisture it will be “wooden”.

So, how to plant carrots, so as not to thin out? One of the ways of planting carrots without thinning is sand. Before planting seeds in the ground, they are recommended to pour the following solution: warm water with the addition of aloe juice (proportion - 1 liter of water / 1 teaspoon of juice). This solution will help remove all unwanted oils that prevent nutrients from entering the seeds. In the solution, the seeds must lie for at least 3 hours.

After the seeds have been in the solution for a sufficient time, they are dried. Already prepared seeds must be mixed with river sand in a 1: 1 ratio. For the best effect, sand is baked in the oven for 30 minutes before mixing the sand with the seeds and cooled to room temperature. In the ground, sow the mixture obtained in the usual way. The sand will eliminate the need to thin out the carrots and will promote its germination.

On a note, gardeners have another way to sow carrots so as not to thin them after - this is planting with the use of paste. Along with the previous method, it is one of the most effective.

Cooking paste is pretty simple. To do this, follow the instructions:

  1. Prepare a tablespoon of flour and 1 liter of cold water,
  2. Mix the ingredients and cook the resulting solution over medium heat. At the same time it should be constantly stirring, so as not to burn the flour,
  3. Ready to cool.

When the paste is cold, they pour in the previously prepared carrot seeds. Stir the seeds and paste.

Then the paste, mixed with seeds, is poured into a container like a teapot, so that there is a narrow spout. It is necessary to then pour the mixture into the grooves in a thin stream.

This method of planting this root has many advantages. It will not only plant carrot seeds without thinning, but also prevent fungal diseases from germinating carrots.

Another method that is used to sow carrots and then do not thin out is to glue the seeds on toilet paper. The way is original, but its implementation will require free time and patience.

Toilet paper is cut in such a way that its width is equal to the width of the future bed. Using a toothpick, glue is applied to the paper so that it does not have time to completely dry before all the seeds are laid out.

As a result, up to 4–5 rows can be made on one piece of paper. Next, the glue must be allowed to dry. Before planting the bed must be watered and put paper on top with seeds. Then sleep all the beds with earth and water again.

Planting carrots without thinning: useful tips

For the favorable growth of carrots, gardeners use several tricks, which simplifies its cultivation:

  • Along the edges of the beds recommend planting radishes. It will sprout earlier and will be a kind of guide for the beds with carrots. In this case, the land between the rows can begin to loosen before the seeds ascend, and the carrot loves loose soil,
  • Doubtlessly, it will be planted on a bed with carrots of onions, as it will drive away carrot flies with its smell.

Having natural vegetables on hand and not devoting all your time to the garden is quite realistic if you know a few tricks.

Why thin out carrots

The main causes of thinning of root crops:

  • densely planted carrots do not allow all fruits to grow and fully develop,
  • with close planting in the process of growth, the roots are intertwined and do not receive the required amount of nutrients,
  • the distance between plants affects the size of the fruit (the larger it is, the smoother and larger the root crop),
  • it is necessary to partially remove diseased and weak plants.

Soaking and germination of seeds

A great alternative to planting dry seed is soaking and germination:

  • soak the seeds for several hours in room temperature water,
  • Soaked seed spread on a damp cloth,
  • wet surface is regularly wetted so that it does not dry out,
  • With the advent of seedlings, the seeds need to be hardened: we leave the seed in the refrigerator for 10-12 days, after which we plant in the beds.

Using adhesive tape

Tape landing is another easy way to get a rich carrot harvest. Seed Adhesive Tape Today, sowing seeds with carrot seeds glued to them are sold in some stores for gardeners. The technology of landing in this way is simple: we stretch the tape along the prepared bed, and then we sprinkle it with a dense layer of soil. When the first shoots appear, we care about watering and weeding the beds.

Sowing in the bag

From the moment when the snow begins to melt, it is necessary to find a place on the site where you can dig a shallow hole and leave a bag of linen with carrot seeds in it. After half a month, when they begin to hatch, we take them out of the bag, mix them with a small amount of sand and scatter this mixture along the furrows. Then we cover the plot with beds of film. After about a week, shoots will appear that can be planted in open soil. This method allows you to get an early harvest, and root crops save a lot of nutrients.

Sowing seeds on toilet paper

The method of sowing root crops on toilet paper is similar to the method using a special adhesive tape, only in this case, everything can be done independently.

Seeding technology is as follows:

  1. Toilet paper is cut into flat strips with a width of 20-25 mm.
  2. To fix the seeds on paper, we use a dense paste prepared from water and starch in the ratio: 1 teaspoon of starch is taken for 1 cup of water.
  3. We spread the adhesive mixture on paper and glue the seeds at the same distance from each other.
  4. When the paste dries, we roll the paper into a roll.
  5. Immediately before disembarking, we make grooves with a depth of 25-30 mm and lay out paper tapes. Then we fall asleep them with soil and we water.

Homemade seeders

The seeder for carrot seeds is made by hand with a plastic bottle. To do this, it cuts a small hole in the size of the seed.

Thanks to a home-made planter, you can quickly sow the beds, but you need to be prepared for the fact that the seedlings will be thick, because it is difficult to control the number of falling out seeds.

Boxes of toothpicks, salt shakers, strainer

To facilitate sowing, they also use boxes for toothpicks, salt shakers, and a strainer. These available tools already have holes that help evenly distribute the seeds of root crops. But, as in the case of homemade planters, gardeners are difficult to control the number of seeds that fall into the groove. With the advent of the first shoots, you need to see if they are too thick and thin out in time if necessary.

Egg cells

The originality and simplicity of the different method using cells for eggs. For sowing roots will need two paper cells, designed for thirty eggs. For the strength of the structure, we put one cell in another and apply it to the loosened soil. Equal wells are obtained in which we place the seed and provide further care.

Using seeders

For dosed sowing of seeds, use a special device - a seeder. It is a two-wheel design with a capacity for seeds. It works according to the following algorithm:

  • there are spikes on the front wheel that make furrows,
  • from the hole in the tank falls a number of seeds,
  • another smooth wheel aligns and rams the bed.
Depending on the functionality, the planters are different. Some are designed not for one row, but for several at once. Others have a diameter and depth furrow regulator or are equipped with a special fertilizer tank. The seeder is selected in accordance with the needs of the economy.

The main mistakes when sowing carrots

Not only beginners, but also experienced gardeners make mistakes when sowing root crops and cannot find an explanation for a poor harvest. Consider the main mistakes when sowing carrots.

  1. Sowing with dry seeds is a simple and effortless method that involves late, uneven, thickened shoots.
  2. Poor thinning of crops, which is explained by the desire to get more yield. Due to this, there will be more root vegetables, but in size they will be small.
  3. Wrong selection of plants for mixed crops.
  4. Using the method of adhesive tape, it is not compacted as it should, but only instilled. As a result, during windy weather, the tape is on the ground surface, and the seeds that have begun to germinate dry up.

Feedback from network users

Pasted to tape. In the winter. Together with the children ... petty tedious work ... I am tired and there is no longer any desire to repeat.

Bought on tape. Yes, they come up with “holes” ... onion sets and then stuck into them)))

They sowed, mixing with sand, and even with such a special seeder, which seemed to spit them out in doses ... all the same, thickened.

Just sown on the sand. Thinned 2 times. Nothing wrong. So I will sow this year, without problems.

Well, the tape is still, bed, do not disappear as good
