Growing pigeons is not as popular as breeding chickens, turkeys, geese or ducks. However, these birds provide delicious tender meat that is superior in protein content to meat from other poultry.

Polish lynx

The breed is of Polish origin and is often grown on a production scale to produce meat of excellent quality. It can not be crossed with other species, because in this case the risk of loss of meat quality is high.

The breed was bred in Italy in early 1327 and named after the city of Modena. It is considered practically the only true European breed. Its external characteristics are:

  • wings are short and slightly raised,
  • the tail is short, narrow and raised up (located at the level of the neck).

The plumage of the Modena pigeon may have a different color, with more than 200 variations established by the poultry farmers. The most popular is blue, bronze, black, silver, red, cream or yellow color. In addition, there are hiking options and combinations of these colors. The pigeon can be both one-colored and multi-colored, scaly and with belts.

Modena has an average size: height - up to 23 cm, length - about 18 cm. The weight of individuals is relatively small - about 350-500 g.

Peculiarities of keeping pigeons

Many poultry farmers keep pigeons in the attics of country houses or build separate poultry houses for them. In any case, the room should be under a canopy, protected from temperature changes, suitable for summer and winter maintenance. It is equally important to have good air ventilation and heating.
